When will we move on?

October 17, 2011

Whenever I correct someone who blames the deficit, the housing market, the unemployment rate and more on President Obama and not on President GWBush, the bloated chest retort is always, “when will we move on from laying all of our national troubles at the feet of the Bush administration. My first answer always has to do with prison terms, but I realize how unkind that is.

So my more considered reply is to lay a groundwork of facts before answering. What I really want first is acknowledgement from the Republican side – especially the Teas Party – that the financial meltdown, the housing meltdown, loss of millions of jobs and 2 wars all happened on Bush’s watch.

Having admitted that, I would like acknowledgement from the R’s and T’s that these were not small problems that effected a small number of people, a small amount of money or that could be straightened out with a few phone calls. The war in Iraq alone has played a significant part in size of our national debt.

If I could ever get an R to agree to those FACTS I would be well on my way to responding to their own question… by repeating it. When WILL we be able to move on from the problems that Bush and company left us with? When will it start to be a common purpose and not the Democrats pulling in one direction and the Republicans in the other?

I’ll tell you when I think it will happen. When the the R’s stop acting as Obama stole the election that rightfully should have gone to McCain. When the R’s stop insisting that they have all the answers when they clearly do not. Certainly there’s proof all around. If their claim that tax cuts would create jobs – where are the jobs now? The taxes are at the same level now than when GWBush lowered them in 2002(?). And ever since that day jobs were NOT created but lost. It’s obvious that the Republican/Laffer formula of lower taxes equals more jobs didn’t play out during the boom years of the Bush admin and clearly have not played in the mess Bush left behind.

So Republicans – when will we move on? When will you accept the facts, admit the mistakes and help President Obama move the country forward?

  1. From Wikipedia
The Bush tax cuts refers to changes to the United States tax code passed during the presidency of George W. Bush that generally lowered tax rates and revised the code specifying taxation in the United States. These were the:

Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA)
Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 (JGTRRA)

While each act has its own legislative history and effect on the tax code, the JGTRRA amplified and accelerated aspects of the EGTRRA. Moreover, since 2003 the two acts have often been spoken of together, especially in terms of analyzing their effect on the U.S. economy and population and in discussing their political ramifications.
